First Grade: The Inside Story

So this morning, Toby's friend was over to catch the bus with us and I overheard this little gem of a conversation -

C: Toby, I know your secret.
T: No you don't!
C: Yes I do - Christy is your girlfriend!
T: I have lots of girl friends!  I know Christy and Avary and Paisley and Ava and Olivia and (and so on, naming all the girls he knows)

I was amused, especially that he doesn't discern between a girlfriend and girl friend, and I have to admit, a bit happy that he hasn't encountered those situations at school yet.

Or maybe he's just so dense that he doesn't know what is going on around him.

When he came home from school he brought home a sweet little book - see, last week he was the VIP of the class (each student gets a week), and as part of that all the kids wrote him a letter and today he brought home a little bound book with all the letters from his classmates.  I have to say, I melted a little when I saw it - I mean, really, how sweet is that?  And what a fun insight into his classmates' minds!

So a few excerpts:

"Your the best Toby.  You are good at math.  You are six or seven."  [I'm not sure if he's the best Toby she knows, or just the best, period]

"I like when you are qwite (quiet)"  [LOL, the real story emerges!]

"You are asom" [What is so endearing about 1st grade spelling?  I love it!]

"You are very cute."  [Hm, I thought there was no boyfriend-girlfriend thing going on?]

"What are you doing tomorrow?  Will you come to my house?"  [This from another girl]

And then the kicker.  Miss Christy writes, "Thank you for being my boy friend."  Either the boy is completely oblivious or he's holding out on me...and as a mother I have to admit...he might be clueless.  LOL.

Overall most students admire his tag playing ability and his shoes (brand spanking new last week and very bright orange and lime green).  The letters were so fun to read and Toby's grin was practically ear to ear as we read the letters - it meant so much to him to hear the nice things his class had to say.  How could this not be the highlight of my week?

8 Months~

I'm not really sure where the last 8 months has gone, but wow!  I can't believe my little chunker has seen 8 months go by!  He is such a joy, a funny, lovey, cuddly baby, and definitely a bit of a momma's boy (though all bets are off when Dad walks in the door from work!).  He is scooting all over the house now - just found the dog's bowls yesterday!  He can get on his hands and knees but still can't master true crawling.  In the last week he's started to go from belly to sitting up, and can pull up on things if they're the right height.  He's close to cruising but still takes a lot of falls in the process, and love him though I do, I gotta admit he's a bit of a crybaby over them (sometimes they clearly don't hurt!)  What can I say, he wants his cuddles!  He says baba and mama, laughs more at his brother and sister than anything else.

He's still on purees and is definitely the pickiest of our kids.  If he doesn't want to eat it, no power of persuasion will convince him otherwise.  And it takes him 2 days to get over a meal he didn't like.  Silly baby.  But he likes most single ingredient fruits and veggies, it's the thicker foods he's not a fan of.  He has mastered the pincher grasp this month and can eat puffs, but anything else he gags on.  Oh and he ate a piece of paper off the floor last week.  That he manages to get down.

At night he is still getting up 2 times, but we're pushing that last wake up pretty close to morning these days - but as soon as we get 2 good nights in a row, he starts getting a tooth or a snotty nose or some other nonsense waking him up extra.  Last night he was up at 12:30 and 6 to eat, so a vast improvement!  Hopefully another month or so and wake up calls will start to disappear.  This mama is tired of them!  At least he really does nap well for me!

Ice Day

So we finally got a day off from school!  Our district doesn't close often, but the overnight "ice event" was enough to ground the buses this morning - even Curtis had a delay!  And the kids are finally getting along so I'm going to try to hide behind the laptop - if they see me, they will start whining again.

We are getting along into 2013 - can't believe it will be March soon - and that means there is a certain birthday approaching.  I can't believe my oldest will be 7!  And tomorrow Jay will be 8 months (pictures to come on that one).  Lucy is quite the 5 year old these days - 5 going on 15, judging from her attitude.

Jay is getting around - still no real crawl, but he gets anywhere he wants to these days by pulling himself along.  He can pull up on things, but if he weighs more than what he's pulling on, he just topples it over on himself.  Everything goes in his mouth these days, and he finally got his first tooth 2 weeks ago!  He's apparently a bit melodramatic, as every bump results in all out screaming - if he was my first I'd probably believe him, but he's my third baby.  Hes crying over things that I know don't hurt.  So I'm having to watch how I react so I don't reinforce the behavior!  Of course, with his new mobility there have been a number of falls that you can tell DO hurt, and he gets lots of cuddles for those!
Here's hoping this is out last winter event of the season - this  girl is READY for spring!

He's an Agreeable Sort of Boy

He's learning new things everyday!

He's been scooting everywhere - meaning more babyproofing on our part - and today sat up from being on all fours - time to lower the crib mattress (he can pull to standing from sitting).

Happy February!

Someone is getting more mobile and is making his way around the house! He's not crawling yet, but he is a master scooter, or getting close to it, anyway.

This morning he was hanging out in the playroom while Lucy and I were coloring.  He loved watching out the windows!

Someone else likes looking out the window too!

I stuck him in a basket so I could get something done....
Aaaaaaand we're back to the front windows :)
And finally, a video showcasing his new skills...he's not particularly fast, but the boy knows what he wants :)

7 Months Has Flown!

I can't believe Jay is 7 months already! He's such a sweet, happy little guy who I just can't imagine life without.  He's scooting a little, and loves to stand at toys (he keeps pulling toys over on himself trying to stand up!)

He loves food, though prefers his food pureed as smooth as possible, and not thick at all.  Flavorwise he will eat it all though!

Still no sign of teeth, though he's drooling and chewing with the best of them!
Posing for the Picture

Someone got jealous

Lunch is exhausting

7 months!
January is going to be closing before we know it.  The kids are back at school (and had a long weekend for MLK Day).  Jay is starting to give me a good 2 hour nap in the afternoons, but is still trouble at night.  We are all looking forward to spring and some warmer temps!  We made it out to the zoo last weekend when it was in the 40's, and that was nice, but the teens this week have been too cold for us!  We are already making some fun summer plans!

Christmas is coming!

Christmas Picture Taking Fun!

Mommy is having some fun with her new camera :)  The only problem was that Jem wouldn't smile because he was too busy having fun with paper, bows, ornaments and presents (we used aunt Erin's present as a prop and he became quite enamored with it!).  I am going to attempt a family picture in front of the tree tomorrow when we are dressed up for Christmas Eve...wish me luck!
